Context:
Botticelli ran a large and active workshop, training many artists, including Filippino Lippi (1457-1504). Parts of this work were probably painted by assistants. The Virgin's face is both the best preserved portion of the painting and the area most certainly by Botticelli; but her robes, particularly her left arm and the yellow lining of the sleeve, have been restored.
