Context:
Painted in 1924 at Juan-les-Pins on the French Rivera, this composition belongs to a series of large, synthetic cubist still lifes created by Pablo Picasso in the mid-1920's. It's cheerful, lively colors and playful forms reflect a relatively tranquil time in the artist's personal life-between the birth of his first son, Paolo (1921), and before his marriage with Olga began to deteriorate. During this period Picasso painted numerous still lifes expressing the simple pleasures of domestic life. This picture includes three pieces of fruit in a white bowl, a bottle, a slice of an apple (painted black and blue), a knife, and a plate of biscuits. Picasso added sand to certain color areas, creating rough surfaces that contrast with smoother ones where brushstrokes are nearly invisible. In other areas, he created intentional crackling by mixing paint layers with varnish or some other substance that made them dry faster than the paint underneath.
