Context:

François Tronchin (1794-1798), prominent in the government and society of his native Geneva, Switzerland, was also an author and patron of the arts. The inclusion of specific objects in the portrait demonstrates Liotard's desire to depict Tronchin as a collector and connoisseur.Tronchin formed an important collection of Dutch, Flemish and Italian pictures, many of which were sold in 1770 to Catherine the Great and are now in the Hermitage (St. Petersburg). The Rembrandt on the easel is in the National Gallery of Scotland.Liotard, a friend and advisor to Tronchin, was much sought after in Europe for his portraits which are striking for their truth to subject, brilliant effect, and extraordinary finish.
